Indeed, one might assert that the tradition, which in English peaked with Donne, Herbert, Vaughn, and Milton, has been in decline, despite the relatively late appearance of a poet as gifted as Gerard Manley Hopkins. Granted, such poets as T. S. Eliot and W. H. Auden based some of their most important works (one thinks particularly of “The.       Here’s a list of the poems, sorted by author (this isn’t the order). Shakespeare (unsurprisingly) shows up quite a bit. Hughes also seems to have his favorites (e.g., Yeats), and I wondered whether some of the obvious early 20th century omissions (Wallace Stevens, Elizabeth Bishop, William Carlos Williams) reflected some sort of judgement /5(11).   Lacking throughout the book is a notion that was familiar to Hopkins of the discernment of the meaning in the form of the poem, of the overthought in the underthought. This lack is ironic, since the authors in their practice of reading Hopkins' verse find many new meanings in the poems that provide an interplay between the theme and the form of.

Comments about Gerard Manley Hopkins Jan Brown (7/30/ PM) I am trying to remember a poem by Hopkins that uses the metaphor of flowing water being forced to rise higher as it goes between two cliffs, i.e., difficulties producing character. Gerard Manley Hopkins is considered to be one of the greatest poets of the Victorian era.

However, because his style was so radically different from that of his contemporaries, his best poems were not accepted for publication during his lifetime, and his achievement was not fully recognized until after World War I.

Hopkins’s family encouraged his artistic talents when he was a youth in Essex. It’s quite unfair to pit Hopkins’s rich and elegant poem against Crane’s minimalist poem, but the two poems illustrate well the difference in the lived-out feeling of these worldviews.

Crane’s poem presents a small part of a naturalist worldview that acknowledges the nihilism of the naturalist’s worldview. Gerard Manley Hopkins SJ (28 July – 8 June ) was an English poet and Jesuit priest, whose posthumous fame established him among the leading Victorian manipulation of prosody – particularly his concept of sprung rhythm – established him as an innovative writer of verse, as did his technique of praising God through vivid use of imagery and nature.
